Description
The first-ever release of Silver Krugerrand coins came in 2017 as the South African Mint celebrated 50 years of production for the Gold Krugerrand. The popularity of the coins in that year led the mint to continue producing silver coins to this date.
The South African Mint achieved a number of firsts in the Krugerrand series in 2017. In honour of the Gold Krugerrand, two versions of a Silver Krugerrand were struck for the first time ever and a Platinum Krugerrand was also issued in that year. The silver coin was so popular with investors and collectors, as it featured a Premium Uncirculated and proof option that year, that the mint continues to issue the coins in the years that have followed.
On the obverse field of 2020 Silver South African Krugerrands features the image of Paul Kruger. This left-profile portrait of Kruger captures him as he looked during the height of his power and influence. Based on an 1892 portrait, the image shows Kruger with his trademark long beard. In 1892, he was in the midst of his long term as President of the South African Republic, a role he held from 1883 to 1900.
